Karen Wallis - selected & rejected

at October 3-21, 2009

an exhibition about choosing what art we like

Part 1 - Personal Choice October 3-13.
This part of the exhibition was interactive. The public were invited to choose their personal selections from a retrospective of Karen Wallis' painting practice.

Individuals and groups were able to view and curate their version of the exhibition, by deselecting the exhibits they did not wish to include. For groups, white sheeting covered each deselected item and the resulting selection was documented. The works were then revealed again for the next person or group to curate their choice. After the exhibition, each ‘curator’ received either a paper copy, or a PDF, of their version of the exhibition.

Part 2 - Institutional Choice October 16-21
was an exhibition of recent work, which had been submitted to various institutions, for exhibitions, residencies and funding opportunities. Also displayed was documentation of the submission process, including the selection and rejection result plus any costs incurred.

Throughout the exhibition there were times for general public viewing and plenty of opportunities to discuss both the art on show and the wider issues of selection and rejection.
